WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 (UPI)-

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced that it has approved the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra to treat male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia in men, but not in women, and that it has also approved the use of the drug for women who have symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

In a statement, FDA’s Office of Generic Drugs said that it has “exceedingly recognized the risks associated with Viagra, including adverse events and drug interactions, and is concerned about the safety of Viagra and its generic counterpart,” including the possibility of a life-threatening allergic reaction in the body or other risks related to Viagra.

“This approval is significant, given the high risk posed by erectile dysfunction,” said FDA’s chief medical officer, Dr. Scott Gottlieb, in a statement.

The agency also said that it is reviewing the use of Viagra in women who have undergone hysterectomist surgery for male pattern baldness. In June, the agency received a letter from the U.
